HOLISTIC CARE

The healing tradition of Japanese onsen

A bustling street scene in a snowy mountain area with traditional Japanese buildings lining a small river, and people walking around.

Japan has more than 27,000 hot springs across 3,000 onsen areas — and Touji, the practice of bathing several times daily for a week or more, has been used for centuries to support recovery from conditions ranging from arthritis and dermatitis to neuralgia and gastrointestinal complaints, depending on the spring. Dr. Wanping Aw, TokudAw's Managing Director, holds a PhD in Biomedical Science with extensive research experience on Japanese hot springs and nutritional science. Share your ailments with us and she will recommend resorts selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment (国民保養温泉地) for their proven therapeutic properties and some foods items you might want to add to your must-do-list. TokudAw is also a member of Team Shin-touji, a Ministry of Environment initiative connecting us with a nationwide network of onsen professionals.

HEALING LANDSCAPES

Relax with the sounds of nature

A Jpaanese garden with a pine tree and a multi-story pagoda in the background.

Forest bathing began as a Japanese practice to simply spend time in nature. In time, it was discovered that there are therapeutic effects towards the practice according to the World Health Organization. Spending time in nature may reduce stress, blood pressure, and even improve heart rate variability. We’ll help you access the best of the Japanese nature sights, many of which are accessible by car and don’t require a lot of walking.
