Samurai, Ninja & Sumo Experiences

Private, immersive encounters with Japan's warrior traditions

Each experience is led by world-class practitioners in private settings — just you and your group — and are designed to leave you with something far more lasting than a photograph. A genuine connection to the disciplines, the history, and the people who keep these traditions alive.

Real instruction and culture, not touristy shows.

EXPERIENCE ONE

The Samurai Experience

Samurai trainer stands in the middle of a tatami mat room with a weapon in hand and two students behind him.

Begin with a 15-minute live sword-fighting performance by KAMUI — the world-famous samurai artist group led by Shimaguchi Tetsuro, the choreographer behind the sword-fighting sequences in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1. Then pick up a wooden sword yourself and learn kengido, KAMUI's original method for experiencing the beauty and discipline of swordsmanship. The session ends with your own sword-fighting scene, filmed using the techniques you've just learned — and the chance to dress in a full hakama for a photo session.

EXPERIENCE TWO

The Ninja Experience

Two people stand in a tatami mat room and study the ways of the samurai.

Under the instruction of Hiroshi Jinkawa — a famed ninjutsu practitioner and authority on the Fuma Ninja of the Kanto region — you'll spend two hours stepping into a world most people only know from films. Learn the history of the Fuma Ninja, practice basic swordfighting and Ninja movement, craft and fire your own bow into the Tokyo forestry, and master the correct technique for throwing a shuriken. This is a meaningful, character-building experience as much as it is an adventure, you’ll dress like a ninja and have the chance for photos.

EXPERIENCE THREE

The Sumo Experience

Three people, two sumo wrestlers and a woman, standing in a sumo ring, smiling and holding their hands up in a greeting gesture inside a decorated indoor venue.

Every day after training, sumo wrestlers gather around the same meal — chankonabe, the hearty hot pot that fuels their strength and builds the bonds of the stable. In this session, you'll share that table. Meet a sumo wrestler, taste chankonabe as it's eaten in the sumo world, and learn how rikishi balance the demands of elite training with rest, nutrition, and ritual — from the Shinto roots of the ring to the daily rhythms that shape a wrestler's life. You'll leave understanding why, in sumo, the meal matters as much as the match. Leave for home with an understanding of nutrition and how it fuels your activities not to mention how important alumni ambassadors are to keeping a the culture strong.
