A Day in Harajuku: Beyond Meiji Jingu and Takeshita Street

Harajuku. The name itself conjures images of vibrant street style, bustling Takeshita Street, and the serene beauty of Meiji Jingu Shrine. While these iconic spots are undoubtedly a must-see for any first-time visitor, there's a whole other side to Harajuku waiting to be explored – a side brimming with unique discoveries, quirky charm, and delightful experiences that go beyond the usual tourist trail. Join me as we embark on a journey through a Harajuku day designed for those who appreciate a blend of tradition, pop culture, and a touch of elegance.

Our adventure begins with a peaceful start at Togo Shrine.

Often overlooked by the bustling crowds heading to Meiji Jingu, Togo Shrine offers a serene escape and a fascinating glimpse into a different facet of Japanese history and culture. Dedicated to Admiral Togo Heihachiro, a hero of the Russo-Japanese War, the shrine grounds are beautifully maintained, featuring a tranquil pond and lush greenery that provide a welcome respite from the city's energy. What makes Togo Shrine particularly charming for many, ourselves included, is its unique offering of Sanrio-themed goshuin (calligraphic stamps received from shrines and temples). Imagine collecting a beautifully penned goshuin featuring Hello Kitty or My Melody – a delightful fusion of spiritual tradition and beloved pop culture that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of modern Japan. It’s a wonderful way to begin a day that promises both peace and playful discovery.

After soaking in the calm atmosphere of Togo Shrine, we take a short stroll to CAS:SPACE.

This multi-purpose creative hub is a true hidden gem, a testament to Harajuku's ever-evolving artistic landscape. CAS:SPACE is more than just a gallery; it's a dynamic environment that showcases emerging artists, hosts pop-up events, and offers a unique retail experience. Depending on when you visit, you might stumble upon a captivating art exhibition, a design market featuring independent creators, or even a workshop. The beauty of CAS:SPACE lies in its constant state of flux, always presenting something fresh and inspiring. It’s a wonderful place to discover local talent and perhaps even take home a one-of-a-kind piece of art or design.

These phone cases have cute designs that pay homage to Japanese culture. They are available for many phone types.

Our next stop brings us face-to-face with a recent sensation in the world of cute characters: the Mofusand Flagship Store.

For those unfamiliar, Mofusand is a delightful series of cat characters, often depicted in various adorable situations and costumes, that has taken Japan by storm. The flagship store is a paradise for fans, offering an extensive collection of merchandise ranging from plush toys and stationery to apparel and homeware. Stepping inside is like entering a whimsical world of fluffy felines, and it's almost impossible to leave without a smile on your face and perhaps a new Mofusand companion in hand. Even if you're new to Mofusand, the sheer cuteness and playful atmosphere of the store are infectious.

Continuing our exploration of Harajuku's unique retail offerings, we make our way to B-SIDE LABEL.

This vibrant store is a haven for sticker enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates quirky, original artwork. B-SIDE LABEL specializes in durable, weather-resistant stickers designed by a collective of talented Japanese artists. Their designs are incredibly diverse, ranging from humorous food motifs and adorable animals to intricate patterns and bold typography. The store itself is a feast for the eyes, with walls completely covered in an dazzling array of stickers. It’s a fantastic place to find a unique souvenir, express your personality, or simply enjoy browsing through hundreds of miniature works of art. You’re bound to find a sticker (or ten!) that speaks to you.

As our Harajuku adventure draws to a close, we treat ourselves to an elegant afternoon at Haute Couture Omotesando.

Nestled in the sophisticated Omotesando area, just a stone's throw from the more bustling parts of Harajuku, this exquisite spot offers a truly luxurious afternoon tea experience. From the moment you step in, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere of refined elegance. The afternoon tea sets are not just delicious; they are works of art, meticulously crafted with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and beautiful presentation. Imagine delicate sandwiches, perfectly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, and an array of exquisite pastries, all accompanied by a selection of fine teas. It’s the perfect way to unwind, reflect on the day’s discoveries, and indulge in a moment of pure bliss amidst the chic surroundings. A truly unforgettable end to a day of diverse delights.
