The Secret Spots of Japan’s Snow Country Winter
Duration: 8 days, 7 nights itinerary for people looking to spend a little time on the slopes—but not the popular ones, and a little time exploring culture and onsen towns, too.
Phase 1: Gunma Prefecture (1 night in Kustatsu Onsen)
Day 1: Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen via Ikaho Onsen
08:30 – Departure from Tokyo Hotel: Head north via the Kan-etsu Expressway toward Gunma.
10:30 – Ikaho Onsen Stone Stairs (1.5 hrs): Walk up the famous 365-step stone stairwell lined with traditional shops, footbaths (ashiyu), and retro steam.
12:00 – Mizusawa Udon Lunch (1 hr): Enjoy Mizusawa Udon (one of Japan's top three udon styles), served ice-cold on bamboo sieves with crispy mountain vegetable tempura.
13:30 – Drive up Mount Haruna & Lake Haruna (1 hr): Drive past frozen Lake Haruna with views of Mount Haruna (the real-life inspiration for Initial D).
15:30 – Arrive in Kusatsu Onsen: Check-in at your ryokan. Stroll around the iconic steam-emitting Yubatake (hot spring field) lit up after dark. Our recommended stay is Hoshinoya Kai.
Day 2: Gunma's Hidden Powder & Onsen Culture
09:00 – Hotel Pickup
09:30 – Palcall Tsumagoi Resort or Katashina / Tambara (3 hrs): Instead of overcrowded tourist mountains, drive 35 minutes to Palcall Tsumagoi, home to Gunma's longest gondola (3.2 km) with light, dry snow and virtually zero lift lines. Perfect for private group snow play or quick hot-lap skiing. Depending on the day’s snowfall, Katashina and Tambra are also great alternatives to catching fresh, not so crowded tracks.
13:00 – Onsen Town Lunch & Sainokawara Park (2 hrs): Head back to Kusatsu for local buckwheat noodles, then take an open-air walk through Sainokawara Park where thermal rivers flow directly through the snow.
15:30 – Yumomi Performance at Netsunoyu (1 hr): Watch the traditional "Yumomi" water-cooling paddle performance with folk singing.
For those who wish to adventure on foot instead of ski or snowboard, we can arrange for a snow shoe trekking + coffee break in the snow or an ice-fishing experience where guests later enjoy a tempura-battered dish of the fish caught afterwards.
17:00 – Drop-off at Ryokan
Phase 2: Nagano Prefecture (2 Nights in Matsumoto / Yudanaka)
Day 3: Kusatsu to Matsumoto via Karuizawa
08:30 – Depart Kusatsu Onsen: Drive down through the snow-capped mountain passes toward Karuizawa.
10:00 – Old Karuizawa Ginza & Kumoba Pond (1.5 hrs): Stroll through Karuizawa’s historic timber-built town center covered in winter frost.
12:30 – Matsumoto Lunch & Nakamachi-Dori (2 hrs): Arrive in Matsumoto. Try local Sanzokuyaki (garlic fried chicken) and explore Nakamachi-dori's traditional white-and-black earthen merchant storehouses (kura).
14:30 – Matsumoto Castle (1.5 hrs): Visit "The Black Crow Castle," one of Japan’s 12 original remaining samurai keeps. The contrast between the jet-black wooden walls and white snow is unmatched.
16:30 – Hotel Drop-off in Matsumoto
Day 4: Snow Monkeys & Hidden Gem Skiing (Tangram / Madarao)
08:30 – Hotel Pickup
09:15 – Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park (2.5 hrs): Walk through the snow-laden pine forest to watch wild Japanese macaques soaking in natural geothermal pools.
12:00 – Tangram Ski Circus / Madarao Mountain Resort (3 hrs): Instead of heavily crowded Hakuba, your private charter drives up to Tangram Ski Circus. It sits on the Nagano-Niigata border and offers pristine tree runs, powder, and clear views across Lake Nojiri. Enjoy lunch at the mountain-base lodge.
15:30 – Zenko-ji Temple, Nagano City (1.5 hrs): Stop at one of Japan's most important 7th-century Buddhist temples before returning.
17:00 – Return to Ryokan

13:30 – Minami-Uonuma Koshihikari Rice Lunch (1.5 hrs): Dine on authentic local Koshihikari rice cooked over traditional charcoal stoves (Kamado).
15:30 – Check-in at Echigo-Yuzawa Ryokan: Settle into your hotel or resort.
17:00 – Ponshukan Sake Tasting: Explore Echigo-Yuzawa Station's famous indoor sake vending-machine hall featuring over 90 Niigata sakes.
Day 6: Yuzawa Ski Resorts & Private Instruction
08:30 – Hotel Pickup
09:00 – Hidden Gem Skiing at Kandatsu or Kagura (4 hrs): Skip GALA Yuzawa's crowded train-station crowds. Head to Kandatsu Snow Resort or Kagura, known for wide slopes, uncrowded terrain parks, and night-skiing views over the valley.
On-slope ski or snowboard instruction: Yuzawa is home to boutique multi-lingual ski schools like Snow Country Instructors. They provide private, certified English or Chinese lessons and can meet your private charter directly at whichever resort has the best conditions that morning.
13:30 – Snow Country Craft Village & Onsen (2 hrs): Visit local artisan shops producing handmade rice crackers and textiles, then unwind at a secluded local footbath or public thermal house.
16:30 – Return to Hotel

14:30 – Asakusa Senso-ji & Sumida River Cruise View (2 hrs): Explore Tokyo's oldest temple complex and views of Tokyo Skytree.
17:00 – Final Hotel Drop-off in Tokyo
