Snow Discovery Itinerary
Discover Japan’s world famous snow through this short itinerary designed for families or people who want to play in the snow in a region somewhat close to Tokyo, Niigata. Perfect for those who may have never experienced snow, travelers who seek an alternative education-based travel, or just like to learn.
This itinerary leverages TokudAw’s vast STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) network of partners. Guests will encounter Artisans and scientists at work in the Snow Country (or Niigata) of Japan.
Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Day 1: The Physics of Play. A mindful introduction to the slopes and snow. Learn body mechanics and snow density through skiing or snowboarding with mindful and careful English-based instruction with TokudAw partner, Snow Country Instructors, followed by an experience learning about the engineering of a traditional Kamakura (snow dome) an trying your ability of building one.
Day 2: Crystallography & Craft. A workshop with a local professional on snow crystals and glaciology, followed by a visit to local Tsubame-Sanjo copper masters to see how the environment shapes local industry and craft of the region.
Day 3: Gastronomy of the Cold. Explore the Yukimuro (snow-fridge). Discover how sub-zero aging alters molecular structures to create Niigata’s famous fermented flavors and shapes some of the region’s famous tastes.
